Ethical & Sustainable Leggings

a review

Before I wrote this post, I didn’t realize how different black leggings could be! After testing all of these, I think I’ve got my favourites and I know what makes a good pair of black leggings for me. I hope this review helps you find the perfect pair for your body type and lifestyle! I often get questions about my favourite ethical, sustainable activewear so today I’m finally sharing with you my thoughts on six different pairs of ethical/sustainable black leggings. I’ll be touching on fit, fabric, where it’s made, and price point.

Nimble Activewear - Moto Mesh Full Length Leggings

Nimble is an Australian, female-founded brand I discovered and purchased from a few years back when I first started learning more about sustainable fashion and capsule wardrobes. I have the Moto Mesh Full Length Leggings, which I believe aren’t available anymore, but I still wanted to throw this brand in as an option.

Fit & Fabric: Unfortunately because I’ve had this pair for a long time, the size has rubbed off the tag, though I typically fall between XXS-S. I’d say the waist is like a mid-rise and it’s full-length. The fabric is 73% Polyester‚ 27% Spandex and is made from post-consumer used recycled plastics. The majority of their products are made in Taiwan.

My Thoughts: These leggings are my most “active” looking pair that I’m reviewing today. They have mesh panels along the leg making them look more like an athleisure piece. I’ve worn them to hot yoga, for at-home workouts, and at the gym and they’ve held up very well. I personally prefer a higher rise on the waist and a bit of a more cropped length, but if you are taller, the length of these would be great.

Price Point: $$$

Everlane recently came out with these leggings and I was curious to try them out…read on, for my thoughts!

Fit & Fabric: I’m wearing the size XXS because I find that Everlane pants usually run a tad large for me. However, for these, I think I could have gone with XS. That being said, the XXS still fits because the material is extremely stretchy without being see-through. I absolutely love the high waist on these because, if you know me, you know I live in high waisted anything. The fabric is 58% Recycled Nylon, 42% Elastane and these are made in Sri Lanka.

My Thoughts: These are superrr stretchy, which I love because it makes it easy to move around in. The key thing is that they are stretchy but not sheer. It has a hidden interior side pocket which is different than the traditional slip pocket at the front of the leggings. They’ve got a very simple look to them with the minimal seams which I personally think makes them more versatile for working out or for every day casual wear.

Price Point: $$

I could not write a whole blog post on activewear and not talk about Girlfriend Collective. I bought these ones last winter because I had heard so much about them and I had been wanting to try them out for a long time.

Fit & Fabric: I have the standard Black Compressive High Rise Leggings in a size XS. The fabric is made up of 79% RPET and 21% spandex and they are made in Vietnam.

My Thoughts: I think these leggings have the perfect blend of stretch and softness. They honestly feel like butter and are so comfortable to move and work out in them. They have been perfect for all things active and are also extremely comfortable to lounge around in. They are more athletic looking with the extra seam detailing. The pocket placement is also not the typical pocket you find in leggings. It’s actually a small interior slip pocket at the back of the pants.

Price Point: $$

Encircled - The Dressy Legging

Now to move on to classic leggings to be worn from day to day — these are the Dressy Leggings from Encircled!

Fit & Fabric: I’m wearing the leggings in a size XS. These are made of the softest rayon bamboo material! They don’t feel as moisture-wicking as some of the more athletic-looking leggings, but these are great more for casual, every day outfits or for lounging. It is definitely a full-length fit on me and is a great option for those of you who are taller. These are made right at home in Toronto, Canada.

My Thoughts: I don’t normally wear these for vigorous exercise mainly because of the material. However, these hit all the right points if you’re looking for something that offers style and comfort. I love the high waist and the simple, yet functional features like the pockets! I wore these on the plane and they were the most comfy thing ever — not to mention the pockets on the side of the pants that are great for holding cards or your phone.

Price Point: $$$

Boodywear - Full Leggings

These are a more recent pair that I’ve tried from Boodywear. They make eco-essentials like undergarments, loungewear, and activewear.

Fit & Fabric: I’m wearing the size XS in these leggings. The material is 80% rayon made from bamboo, 13% nylon, and 7% spandex. I noticed that this pair is not as elastic as some of the other ones I’ve reviewed. This one also has more of a mid-rise, if you’re not a fan of high waisted leggings. For me, I would’ve preferred a higher waist on these. These are also quite full-length so they’re a great fit for anyone who is taller.

My Thoughts: Overall, these are comfortable, but compared to some of the other ones, they are not the most comfortable pair I’ve tried. They are however, the most affordable pair on this list and they do the job as a pair of activewear leggings. It’s a very classic pair of leggings and has the pocket at the front of the pants.

Price Point: $

I received these high waisted leggings from Miakoda a few winters ago and am still loving them!

Fit & Fabric: I’m wearing these leggings in a size XS. The material is 60% bamboo 30% organic cotton and 10% spandex. The rise is a mid-rise and sits just under the belly button. These are another great option for taller people as you can see from the photo above that there is still quite a lot of material at my ankles. These are made in New York, USA.

My Thoughts: These are a very classic pair of black leggings. They are an extremely soft bamboo cotton blend and are the perfect leggings for lounging around or for every day outfits. On me, I would have preferred a more cropped look at the ankles, but having them longer makes them a better fit for others who are taller. These are very minimalistic with no extra seams or detailing on the pants, so if you’re looking to invest in a pair of classic black leggings, these would make a great choice!

Price Point: $$$

I hope this review was helpful for you if you’re on the hunt for a pair of black leggings from sustainable/ethical brands. These are only the few that I’ve tried and I’m sure there’s tons of other ones out there! Let me know your favourites down below, I’d love to check them out!

Styling Boots for Winter

Styling Boots for Winter

how-to

It’s time — time to pull out the boots! Depending where you live, it probably changes what boots you’ll be styling this winter. I’ve pulled out three pairs of boots to style for this segment. These boots help me transition from fall to deep winter. Alright, let’s get into it!

The Boots

  1. A classic pair of rain boots - I’m styling the Classic Black + White Ankle Rain Boot from Alice + Whittles. These are the perfect rainy day boot that seriously go with any outfit because they are so simple and have such a classic look. I’ve worn these around town and also on light hikes and they’ve held up very well keeping my feet dry and warm.

  2. The elevated ankle boot - I’m styling the Town Boot from Dear Frances. These are literally a dream to wear! They are so slim and beautifully crafted with the most flattering soft square-toe silhouette. They feature a comfortable heel and delicate panelled sides. These have been my go-to pair of every day boots.

  3. The weather-defying combat boot - I’m styling the Phoenix Lace Boot from Sorel. I bought these last year to replace an old pair of winter boots that came to the end of its life. These held up pretty well in the Toronto snow and keep my feet feeling snuggly and warm throughout the winter.

Outfit #1

Look number one is made for those light, rainy fall days — complete with wardrobe staples like a striped long sleeve shirt and a pair of wide leg denim. Pop on a fleece jacket and some classic rain boots for the perfect casual rainy day outfit.

Outfit #2

Sweater: Modern Fisher Cotton Sepia, Tradlands Denim: Abigail Crop, Outland Denim

Denim: Abigail Crop, Outland Denim

This outfit is for those cold rainy days when you just want to stay snuggled in bed. I’ve tucked a classic fisher knit into a pair of black skinnies, along with cozy socks. To complete the look, I went full on with the rain gear — rain jacket and rain boots to make for the perfect waterproof outfit!

Outfit #3

If you know me, you know I love timeless, classic outfits. This outfit is something I can see myself wearing season after season. I’ve styled these ankle boots with a pair of straight leg jeans and a chunky, oversized black knit. This is my kind of go-to outfit during the colder seasons. I mean, who doesn’t want to snuggle up in the coziest sweater while sipping on a cup of hot coffee? For the outerwear, I’ve gone with my oversized wool coat that gives it a pop of colour while keeping the sophisticated feel of the outfit.

Outfit #4

Continuing on with the classic outfits, lately I’ve been experimenting with lighter denim for fall/winter and have been loving it! It adds another dimension to an outfit and a sort of airy, lightness to outfits that would typically be weighed down by heavier knits. In this outfit, I’m playing with contrast. Contrast in colour as well as with silhouettes. I really enjoy the dramatic feel of the black turtleneck against the beige pants and the form fitting top with the wide-leg bottoms.

Outfit #5

Turtleneck: old UNIQLO Denim: old Cheap Monday Belt: Frank & Oak

The final pair of boots I’m styling are my winter snow boots. This is an outfit I often sport during the winter because it’s simple and easy to throw on in the hustle and bustle of a busy morning. This outfit has a slimming silhouette with the black turtleneck and high waisted mom jeans, cinched at the waist with a minimalistic circle belt. The combat-style boots add a bit of edge to an otherwise “plain” look. For this wintery look, a puffer jacket is the way to go!

Outfit #6

Sweater: Oversized Alpaca Crew, Everlane Denim: Abigail Crop, Outland Denim

Toque: me-made hat! Puffer: ReNew Long Puffer, Everlane Boots: Phoenix Lace Boot, Sorel

This final outfit features the most gorgeous alpaca wool knit tucked into a pair of black skinnies. The combat boots continue the line of the black skinnies, making my legs appear longer than they are. This helps to elongate the body and is a simple styling hack for anyone looking to add a little height to their outfits! I “topped” off this look with a me-made toque and a puffer for my final deep freeze outfit.

That’s it from me! I hope you enjoyed these wintery outfits and little tips along the way for styling boots this season. Maybe it’s given you a bit of inspiration. I’d love to hear your thoughts — let me know which outfit was your favourite! Is there one that you want to try out this season?

Read this when you want to invest in a shirt.

Lately, I’ve been trying to scale back my collaborations and focus more on the partners with whom I have a working relationship. All this thinking got me to the idea of wanting to write more posts that help you make informed decisions when it comes to making investment purchases for your closet. There are so many details to consider especially when you’re making online purchases.

In this post, I'll be sharing my thoughts on 5 button-ups that I own. We'll cover everything from fit and cutting, breathability, material, overall quality, and price point.

My sizing for reference: Height: 5’5, Hips: 34, Waist: 26, Bust: 31, my typical size is 00-0 or XS-S

Ready to hop in? Let's get started!

1 — Everlane Silky Cotton Oversized Shirt

First up is this recent launch from Everlane, the Silky Cotton Oversized Shirt. I had been looking for a classic oversized, cotton button-up for a while and this one definitely helped fill that gap. Upon first wearing it, I loved the oversized fit and the breathability of the material, though that does affect the sheerness of the shirt. The price point of the shirt is $60 USD. I think this shirt sits at a pretty standard shirt price point. This shirt is 100% cotton so although it wrinkles, it does not wrinkle as much as a linen shirt would. The feel of the shirt is very silky, as the name suggests, and soft on the skin. It has a one large pocket over the left side of the chest and has standard white buttons that create a seamless look. The silhouette of this shirt is very relaxed and casual and I love it styled tucked or untucked.

TTS? - Yes, I’m wearing a size 0 in the colour Off-White.
Manufactured in Shenzhen, China
Recommendations: This shirt is one of the more budget friendly options, sitting at $60 USD (if you’re Canadian, look at my recommendations for shirt #5). I’m in love with the oversized fit of this shirt and definitely think it’s a great option if you’re just starting to explore capsule wardrobes and wanted to invest in a classic wardrobe piece. It’s versatile and can be worn in various different settings.

2 — Curator SF Work Shirt

Next up, the Work Shirt in Blue Cloud from Curator SF. I have been a long time fan of Curator SF since I started exploring sustainable and ethical fashion. When they reached out a few months ago to partner up, I was ecstatic! That’s also when I was introduced to the this shirt. This shirt has a relaxed, casual feel and is made with a very sturdy material. Out of all the shirts I’ve reviewed, this one is definitely heftier and what I like to call “wrinkle-friendly”. It is 100% cotton so it also does not wrinkle as much as a linen shirt, but when it wrinkles it looks “lived in” rather than wrinkly. The Work Shirt is made with a bit of a thicker material so it is not sheer at all. Some noted special features of this shirt are the large, metal buttons and deep side pockets that are hidden along the seam of the shirt. The price point of this shirt is $132 USD, which is a higher price point, but is justifiable in how the company pays fair wages and chooses to keep its production local in one of the most expensive states while supporting their economy (I will explain more in another post — stay tuned!).

TTS? - Yes, I’m wearing a size XS in the colour Blue Cloud.
Manufactured in San Francisco, USA
Recommendations: This is your go-to if you’re passionate about supporting small, locally made businesses. It’s also a heavier material than the Everlane shirt so it’s great for cooler climates and seasons. I can see myself styling this from now through Fall and will probably only really retire it in the dead of winter.

3 — Tradlands 101 Martine Cameo Tencel

This 101 Martine Cameo shirt has been a closet favourite throughout the summer season. It has a classic fit and has similar features to the Everlane shirt such as the large pocket on the left side of the chest. This shirt isn’t wrinkle-free, but the Tencel-linen (77% Tencel, 23% Linen) blend fabric is great for people who can’t be bothered steaming out their shirts. I’d say this is a pretty standard shirt, and the only thing I noticed was that the sleeves are a bit longer than the usual cutting of the others, but this honestly doesn’t bother me. I personally love to style this one tucked into some high waisted jeans. The price point of this shirt is $167 USD.

TTS? - Yes, I’m wearing a size XXS.
Manufactured in China
Recommendations: If you’re looking for a classic, durable shirt from a small ethical American business, check out Tradlands for staple wardrobe pieces. This specific shirt also comes in a luxurious black Tencel material if you’re looking to invest in a more neutral coloured piece.

4 — Power of my People Philosopher Shirt

Of course I had to sneak in a few Canadian brands for you! It’s always a treat to discover Canadian-made brands and I’d be lying if I said they didn’t hold a special place in my heart. Power of my People is a Canadian brand based in British Columbia. They are truly the “shirt people” — the entire collection is filled with women’s and men’s shirts. It’s most definitely a brand to explore if you’re looking to invest in a shirt. The Philosopher Shirt is a 100% linen shirt and is perfect for summer and spring. It’s breathable, lightweight and has a casual oversized fit. Since it is a linen material, it can be a little bit sheer. However, since I have it in black, it’s actually quite opaque. I especially love the two giant pockets on the front, not the mention a little pen holder pocket! It has black buttons down the front that creates a very seamless, monochromatic look. The price point of this shirt is $165 CAD

TTS? - I have it in an XS (the Wayward Fit) and found my shirt to be a bit larger than expected, so I would recommend sizing down in this particular fit.
Manufactured in Richmond, British Columbia
Recommendations: If you want to support a Canadian-made brand, Power of my People is a clear winner. All of their clothing is made with high quality, natural fibres like cotton and linen, so if you’re trying to avoid synthetics, I’d take a peek here!

5 — KOTN Essential Shirt

Last but most definitely not least, is another amazing Canadian brand based right here in Toronto, Canada. The thing that sets Kotn apart from other brands is their undeniable efforts of authenticity with their consumers in revealing their traceability. This brand is all about transparency in their supply chains and it’s very evident in all their collections and new launches. The Essential Shirt is from their new “Wovens Launch”. It features the softest lightweight twill material that’s 100% Egyptian cotton. The twill material gives the shirt a very subtle woven texture, which I really love. Although this is a white shirt, I did not find the material to be see-through. Some other features to note would be the pleated cuffs and the tasteful faux horn buttons that run along the front of the shirt and on the cuffs. The fit is pretty standard and classic, and I also noticed there are darts on the side of the shirt over the chest which give it a more tailored look. The price point of this shirt is $75 CAD.

TTS? - Yes, I’m wearing a size 0 in the colour Alabaster.
Manufactured in Egypt
Recommendations: This shirt is a great option for you if you care a lot about traceability and ethics of where your clothes are made. Kotn also puts 1% of every sale along with other additional revenue towards funding schools in their very own farming communities. This shirt combines great quality, fit, and ethics all in one!

aug 26 - sept 7-27.jpg

You’ve made it to the end! I hope you enjoyed this review and found it helpful. After reviewing these shirts in more detail, I noticed small differences and things that made each shirt or company unique. I would recommend using this review as a guideline when you’re looking to invest in a shirt that works for you; whether that be based on quality, fit, materials, company ethics, price point, or where it’s manufactured! There are a multitude of factors to consider when you’re investing in slow fashion, so I hope this is a helpful guide as a starting point.
